High Visibility and TTMC-W17

TTMC-W17 standard

The TTMC-W standard has recently changed to TTMC-W17. The purpose of this change is to align the NZTA requirements to the Amendment No 1: 2016 of AS/ NZS 4602.1:2011.

You may have already seen that some of the new TTMC-W17 products are filtering though at Argyle Performance Workwear - all these garments have been tested and state this new compliance on our garment standards label.

Some changes are simple placket changes from Navy to Orange (plackets must be made of compliant material, so any buttons on the placket must match) to meet the new TTMC-W17 standard.

The front length of Polos, Shirts and Vests has also been revised to maximum 710mm (for garments designed to fit a 100-105cm chest).

For more information a list of the amendments to the NZTA CoPTTM have been summarised below to more-easily understand the implications of these changes:

  • The specification now states that Amendment 1:2016 of AS NZS 4602.1:2011 has been included.
  • The garment to be tested is one that has been designed to fit a chest size of 100-105cm as in AS/NZS 4602.1:2011 (formerly a garment to fit chest size 92-95 cm). This means that now if testing is required to both standards, only one garment has to be sent.
  • Accordingly the areas of high visibility background material for each design (vests, jackets, overalls and miscellaneous garments) and other relevant garment dimensions have been adjusted for these larger garments (eg for vests the front qualifying area is now 0.24m2 instead of 0.21m2.
  • The technical recognition ID is stated as being the wearer’s upper front right side (formerly stated as upper front left).
  • The new compliance label is TTMC-W17 (formerly TTMC-W).
  • There can be no breaks on the waist hoop except for the permitted 25 mm front opening break. The exception is the overall garment where side breaks are permitted no greater than 50 mm at each side to enable pocket openings (permitted by omission in July 2015 for TTMC-W, but clarified as not permitted in TTMC-W, Feb 2017). Side breaks are permitted in 4602.1:2011).
  • The vertical measurement for the position of the waist hoop is now taken from the highest point of the shoulder, so for sloping shoulder designs the measurement point will be higher than the top of the vertical tapes (formerly measured on the vertical strips).
  • An addition to the previous version July 2015 is the optional yellow MTC sleeve with reflective hoops for Stop/Go operators (the July 2015 version had a TC vest, but this has been removed).
  • The use of underarm gussets for ventilation has been clarified (they are permitted in 4602.1:2011). They must be the same colour visually as the main torso material, but do not have to be compliant. Alternatively, for wet weather garments three eyelets max 10 mm diameter per sleeve may also be used, but they do not have to the same colour as the background material.
  • In the July 2015 document the colour of zip, buttons and similar closure devices was not mentioned. This was added in a Technical Note issued September 2016 and is current. Zips may be black but matching the garment colour is preferable. Any buttons, domes or similar closure devices that are placed on compliant material must match the colour of the garments. In addition, plackets must be made of compliant material, so any buttons on the placket must match.
  • The optional cross tape design for garment backs was introduced in the September 2016 Technical Note with an introductory date of October 2016. It is permitted in all garments with the exception of STMS.
  • The RF tapes have to be no less than 50 mm wide (in the July 2015 version it was 50±1 mm and was changed in the Technical Note issued September 2016).
  • STMS badge material is required to fit into the red orange colour space of AS/NZS 1906.4:2010 (no luminance is required) and have a photometric performance of at least 60 CIL/M2 when tested at 5o entrance and 2o observation. There are no other tests required on the orange STMS material.
  • Any manufacturer’s label has to be either on the lower leg or sleeve on non–compliant material. Therefore vests cannot have such a label.

 

AS/NZS 1906.4:2010 - High visibility materials for safety garments

This standard specifies minimum colour and luminance requirements for fluorescent (F) or non-fluorescent (NF) background (compliant) materials and retro-reflective material (reflective tape) as used in the manufacture of garments for high risk applications.

“Class F” (fluorescent background material):

Refers to Fluorescent fabrics which have fluoro pigments. These include all our Safety Vests, Polo’s, Polyester/Cotton Shirts and Rainwear. Our Fluoro Yellow and Fluoro Orange Polycotton Protex Overalls also meet “Class F”. This includes DOPPC, TTPPCLT & CTPPCLW styles.

“Class NF” (Non—fluorescent background material):

All 100% Cotton Overalls, our natural fibres CTPCNLW and FTPCNLW, the Modacrylic FEPVC and FJPVC, and the 100% cotton Shirts are “Class NF” (Non—fluorescent background material). In general, natural fibres are not capable of taking a fluorescent pigment. The main difference is Class F garments have to meet a lot higher minimum luminance level than Class NF garments.

 

AS/NZS 4602:1:2011 – Garments for high risk applications

This standard specifies the design of garments in day only, night only and day/night situations. This specifies the minimum area of fluorescent or non-fluorescent background (compliant) materials present, including fabric, retro reflective tape for night visibility garments, and design and colours for day and night garments.

This standard specifies requirements for clothing intended to provide visibility of the user in high risk applications under any light conditions by day and under illumination by vehicle headlights in the dark (24 hours visibility). Effective visibility is to be provided by compliant fabric and reflective stripes.

Day only use: A Day only compliant garment must have a minimum 0.2m² of compliant orange or yellow material on both the front & back that completely encircles the upper torso excluding sleeves and any non complaint fabric collars & plackets.

Day/Night use: A Day/Night compliant garment must have a minimum 0.2m² of compliant orange or yellow material on both the front & back that completely encircles the upper torso excluding sleeves and any non complaint fabric collars & placket (must be visible - fabric covered by silver retro reflective tape is excluded). Retro-reflective material on the front and the back of the garment must comply within the design specified in the standard . This retro-reflective material must also be a minimum 50mm wide.

Night use: A Night compliant garment must include  Retro-reflective material on the front and the back of the garment within the design parameters  specified in the standard . This retro-reflective material must also be a minimum 50mm wide.

 

NZFOA Forestry Standard - Industry Approved Guidelines for clothing for forestry use (Unofficial NZ Standard)

This guideline specifies the minimum acceptable design standards for garments intended for use within New Zealand commercial forest environments. The garment must be made from a Fluoro Yellow or Fluoro Orange material that is compliant to AS/NZS 1906.4.

FID (Forest Industries Day time): Requires a minimum area of 0.06m² of fluoro material on both the front and back upper torso. Each solid block of fluoro grid must not be less than 15cm² with no dimensions less than 1cm of the solid block.

FIND (Forest Industries Day and Night): In addition to the above, a minimum of 150cm² of retro-reflective material is required on both the front and back upper torso.

 

UltraFlect®

Argyle use UltraFlect® retro-reflective tape on all of our overalls, workwear and apparel. This tape exceeds all of the relevant requirements for European and Australian/New Zealand joint standards for Day/Night use.

We use the UltraFlect Industrial tape on our Overalls, and Ultraflect domestic wash tape on our other apparel. The industrial tape has been wash-tested to comply with wash standards which require the tape to be washed 30 times at 90°C, or dry cleaned 10 times. We also hold test certificates for the UltraFlect Industrial tape for 75 washes at 75°C, and 100 washes at 60°C.

We firmly believe that this is the only tape on the market to have been Industrial Wash-tested to this extreme, and stand by the quality and durability of the product.

If you are worried about sunburn caused by reflection from the reflective tape, this is no longer an issue. Our tape is retroreflective and works the same as a mirror. The light can only reflect directly back to the light source. Old reflective tape used to reflect off in every direction (same as getting sunburnt after a day on a ski field) and definitely increased the risk of sunburn however with developments in the technology of retroreflective tape this is no longer a concern.
