Hi vis safety workwear and safety clothing standards in NZ

2nd June 2016

As leaders in Hi vis safety workwear and safety clothing in New Zealand, we often get questions about the high visibility standards for safety garments in NZ.

We’ve done up a brief outline of the main hi vis standards that impact us in NZ, and how these affect your safety workwear and safety clothing.

AS/NZS 1906.4:2010 - High visibility materials for safety garments

This standard specifies the minimum colour and luminance requirements for hi vis fabrics, both fluorescent (F) or non-fluorescent (NF) background (compliant) materials, and hi vis reflective tape (retro-reflective material) that is used in the manufacture of safety workwear and safety clothing for high risk applications.

AS/NZS 4602:1:2011 – Garments for high risk applications

This standard specifies the design of safety workwear and safety clothing in day only, night only and day/night applications. This specifies the minimum area of high visibility materials (including hi-vis fabric and hi vis reflective tape), the design of the safety garment, and the colours for day and night garments.

Day only use: A Day only compliant garment must have a minimum 0.2m² of compliant hi-vis orange or yellow material on both the front and back, excluding sleeves, collars and plackets.

Day/Night use: A Day/Night compliant garment must have a minimum 0.2m² of compliant hi-vis orange or yellow material on both the front and back, excluding sleeves, collars and plackets (must be visible - fabric covered by hi vis reflective tape is excluded). High vis reflective tape on the garment must comply within the design specified in the standard, and must be a minimum 50mm wide.

Night use: A Night compliant garment must include High vis reflective tape on the front and the back of the garment as per the design specified in the standard, and must be a minimum 50mm wide.

NZTA code of practice (CoPTTM) Temporary Traffic Management Control - Wet (TTMC-W)

The NZTA Code of Practice specifies the standard of safety clothing that a worker must wear while working in or close to hazardous traffic areas. The Temporary Traffic Management Control Code of Practice (CoPTTM) states that each garment must include a certain area of hi-vis orange fabric, and a specific configuration of High vis reflective tape. This CoPTTM covers both the compliancy of the design and the high visibility and retro-reflective tape. A whole range of Hi vis safety workwear is included for TTMC, including safety vests, overalls, rainwear, shirts and polo’s. Make sure your high vis garments include the letters TTMC-W label in the neck label.
